LE JARDIN MAGIQUE: Les Papillons
I am pleased to take you into my world of butterflies! Les papillons (butterflies) have a profound meaning for me. They remind me of my deceased son, Thomas. When Tommy passed, I was seeing butterflies everywhere! On the dashboard of my car, in the street, in the fields. I would open a book and be directed to a butterfly story. Isaiah -my first son- would come to me holding a dead butterfly and say 'look, mummy, look!!'. I remember telling my very matter-of-fact husband about this and he listen to me kindly. That same day- he called me out to the front door. Underneath him he noticed that our doormat was.... can you guess??? a BUTTERFLY!!
When I started the seeds of my latest art show 'Le Jardin Magique', I never thought that butterflies would take such a leading role, but it did, and I let it be. As it turned out, they really did stole the show!
The more I did my research on butterflies, the more my mind was blown. In a nutshell, butterflies carry the meaning a 'released soul'. They are symbol of death but mostly REBIRTH. Has I understood it, Tommy was in my life but only in a different form.
Butterflies were showing up at such a intense, specific time in my life. Here I was grief stricken, wounded and scared. No matter - I felt Tommy, most importantly his love, all around me.
Since then, i've heard & read other insights. Butterflies stories are usually surrounded by growths, flight, a transition and consequently freedom. Ashley, one of my dear student sent me this version:
When the butterfly is transforming inside the crysilis & trying to break free from the crysilis, it is a very painful process. If you were to watch this process of breaking free, many people feel the need to help her get out of the crysilis when they see the struggle. However, we are urged not to interfere with this process of transformation as it is vital to the development and growth. It is through this process that the butterfly learns how to use its wings for flight. It is through this struggle that the butterfly builds the muscles & strength in its wings to be able to fly and soar! So, without this struggle, there is no strength. The struggle is necessary for the butterfly to have the strength that it needs. -
I had a beautiful realization at the end of my show. That Tommy was the butterfly, yes. But that I too, was changing and finding freedom & relief in my own life. I, too, was the butterfly!
There's is song from 'LES SOEURS BOULAY' that I love. One of the lyrics is ' on est plus fort entremeler'. We are stronger united. And also 'de la noirceur nait la beaute'. From darkness is born beauty.
Butterflies are the perfect metaphor from coming out of the cocoon (darkness) and flying out, tall, proud, elegant & strong.
Thank you for reading, looking, absorbing my art & words. See the whole 'Les Papillons' Collection here. Except for ONE, all are ORIGINAL art, meaning there is only ONE of them!
Yours in freedom & butterflies,
